What is the Clean Energy Rewards Program?

For years, Montgomery County has been a national leader in the use of wind power. And now, the county wants to encourage residents & businesses to also sign up for renewable energy, to reduce the environmental impact of electricity you use at your home or your business.  By signing up with the WindCurrent company, there is nothing to install, no contract to sign, and no time commitment.  The County’s Clean Energy Rewards Program will pay a portion of your cost to participate. However, the number of participants is limited.  Why is electricity from renewable sources so important?
Most of our nation’s electricity comes from burning coal, and our air is some of the worst in the nation. Electricity from wind power creates zero emissions, and costs only slightly more than electricity from traditional sources – just a few cents more per kilowatt hour.

Q

How do I purchase wind power?

A

WindCurrent’s customers pay only the price difference (just that few cents per kilowatt hour), by purchasing a Renewable Energy Certificate. With WindCurrent’s simple program, you can avoid the production of literally tons of emissions in our local air. And there’s no need to change your utility company!

Q

Tell me about WindCurrent.™

A

WindCurrent is a Maryland small business that provides its Renewable Energy Certificates to many local organizations who are concerned with climate change and national energy security, including:  the World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC, the US Department of Homeland Security, US Department of Interior, and the Maryland Public Interest Research Group.

Q

How will I benefit from the Clean Energy Rewards Program?

A

As a resident of the county:
By supporting electricity generated from clean, renewable power, you are avoiding the production of toxic emissions from traditional powerplants. People who sign up are sending a signal that Americans want a smarter, more sustainable energy future.  The County will provide a credit of up to $100 a year for supporting renewable energy at your home. If you live in an apartment or condo, and do not receive a power bill, you can still participate!

As a small business owner in the county:
Your employees and customers will see your commitment to building a more sustainable energy future for Montgomery County, for our region, and for our nation. WindCurrent’s staff will help you publicize your company’s participation in the community, to your employees and customers. The County will provide a credit of up to $2000 a year for supporting renewable energy at your business.  Organizations who lease their office space and do not receive a power bill  can also participate!
